If you have ever been intimidated by baking bread, this recipe was made for you. Four pantry staples and a long, hands-off rise do all the work, and a preheated Dutch oven delivers a crackling, deep-golden crust with a soft, chewy interior. There is no kneading and no fancy equipment, just the deep satisfaction of pulling a bakery-worthy loaf from your own oven.
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 2 Tsp Instant Yeast
- 1 1/2 Tsp Salt
- 1 1/2 Cups Warm Water
Directions
Directions
- In a large bowl, stir together the flour, yeast, and salt.
- Pour in the warm water and mix with a wooden spoon until a shaggy, sticky dough forms. Do not knead.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise at room temperature for 2–3 hours, until doubled in size.
- About 30 minutes before baking, place a Dutch oven with its lid into the oven and preheat to 450°F (230°C).
- Lightly flour your work surface and gently scrape the dough out of the bowl. Fold the edges toward the center a few times to form a rough ball.
- Place the dough onto a piece of parchment paper.
- Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven, lift the parchment with the dough into the pot, and cover with the lid.
- Bake for 30 minutes with the lid on.
- Remove the lid and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until the crust is deep golden brown.
- Transfer the bread to a wire rack and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
